Ask a question, point it at a folder, and get back a brief where every claim names the file it came from. That is the Researcher in this AI document research template, an employee for people who need a sourced answer from their own material, whether reports, contracts, notes or PDFs, and not from the open web.
Biilda is a free desktop app for Windows and macOS. You describe what you want in chat, and it builds AI employees (its word for an AI agent with a job), skills and scheduled tasks.
What this template does
Adds the Researcher on its own: give it a question and the folder to look in, and it reads the relevant documents and writes a structured, cited brief — fact, inference, and assumption kept separate, gaps flagged rather than guessed at.
It works from your documents and general knowledge only; it has no connectors and cannot fetch live data. Run the research-brief task whenever you have a question that needs a sourced answer.
How does an AI that reads your documents keep its answers honest?
The Researcher runs one task, Research brief, whenever you have a question that needs a sourced answer. Under the Research method skill it reads only the granted documents that bear on the question, not the whole folder. It sorts what it finds into three piles: what the documents state as fact, what follows from them as inference, and what is merely assumed. Every claim is traced to its source file, and the brief says what the documents cannot answer.
That separation makes the brief usable, because you can see which lines you could quote and which to check. It is closed-book research, so the answer is only as good as the documents you grant. The brief is written to a new file in the same folder. For open-ended research and report work, see AI for research and reports.
What do you need to set it up?
No connectors. A folder with the documents to read.
- Download Biilda and open it.
- Open Templates and find Researcher.
- Add it in one click.
- Grant the folder with your documents using your computer's own folder picker.
- Edit the Research brief task's instructions to name your question, switch the employee on, and run the task. It starts off.
Biilda is free to download and has no subscription. Credits start at $20, each task costs what it uses, and Research brief runs on Balanced (pricing).
What can you change?
The question itself is what you edit most, since the task names it in its instructions. After that, the Research method skill can ask for a particular layout, such as a one-paragraph answer followed by evidence. Separate folders keep projects apart, so each brief draws only from the right files. For tier, Best suits a question with a lot at stake and Economy a quick lookup. Ask Chat for a schedule if the question recurs.
What does it not do?
Nothing outside your folder is touched: it does not browse the web, pull live data or call another service. It cannot cite what you did not give it, and it says where the documents leave a question open. It makes no decision for you. For how data moves when a task runs, see privacy and local data. The same Researcher sits inside the strategy and research team.
